AEG is out at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario with management being handed over to SMG, which also runs the nearby Ontario Convention Center. AEG had managed the building since it opened in 2008 and continues to own and manage the building’s hockey team, the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League.
“AEG Facilities and the City of Ontario have mutually agreed that as of July 1, 2016, AEG will transition from management of the Citizen’s Bank Arena and focus on the long-term success of the Ontario Reign hockey team,” according to a statement from AEG spokesperson Michael Roth. “Since the opening of the Citizen’s Bank Arena in 2008, we have had a valuable and mutually beneficial partnership with the City. AEG was instrumental in the westward movement of the American Hockey League and our focus going forward is on the Reign and their continued success. As the defending Calder Cup champions, their first season has been a tremendous success.”
Ontario City Councilman Alan D. Wapner also released a statement after the cancellation, stating it was the City Council’s vision to have one company managing city-owned facilities.
“This action will provide a synergy to enhance both venues with one team to provide strategic marketing, staffing, sales and a joint calendar,” Wapner said.
It’s unclear whether or not the hockey team will remain at the facility.
