That was the most alpha male thing we have ever seen. If you were unsure whether the Aug. 26 pay-per-view fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor was a trainwreck, all doubts were cast aside yesterday in Brooklyn by arguably one of the strangest press conferences ever held.
McGregor showed up shirtless in a fur coat, while Mayweather came in draped in an Irish flag. It didn’t take long for things to get racial, with McGregor telling the audience: “A lot of you in the media seem to be saying I’m against black people.” He then praised Brooklyn’s own Notorious B.I.G. – the deceased rapper with whom he shares a nickname. “That’s absolutely ridiculous. Do they not know I’m half-black? I’m half-black from the bellybutton down.”
McGregor gave Mayweather Jay Z’s new album 4:44 and told him to “learn how to build a real empire, not a fake empire.” When it was Mayweather’s turn, he shouted, “Turn the music on for the stripper!” then made it rain by throwing a huge stack of dollar bills in the air. After the press conference, Mayweather told the media “racism still exists” and said he found it disrespectful when McGregor gyrated his hips in the direction of Mayweather’s teenage daughter.
Somehow, I blame Trump for all of this. This is not the fight that we, as a country, want. This is the fight we deserve.
