Villains will hit stores Aug. 25 with nine tracks via Matador Records. The band has released the album’s first single “The Way You Used to Do,” which features the scuzzy guitar we’ve come to expect from the QOTSA, along with Ronson’s notorious pop stylings.
Lead singer and guitarist Josh Homme said of the album in a release, “The most important aspect of making this record was redefining our sound, asking and answering the question ‘what do we sound like now?’ If you can’t make a great first record, you should just stop–but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn’t evolve, you become a parody of that original sound.”
Explaining the title of the album, Hommes said “Villains isn’t a political statement. It has nothing to do with Trump or any of that shit. It’s simply 1) a word that looks fantastic and 2) a comment on the three versions of every scenario: yours, mine and what actually happened… Everyone needs someone or something to rail against—their villain—same as it ever was. You can’t control that. The only thing you can really control is when you let go.”
The album is available for preorder on deluxe vinyl, standard vinyl, CD and digital (all formats include an instant download of first single “The Way You Used To Do”). In addition to the new album, the band has announced the North American Villains tour. The tour will kick off on June 22 at Rapids Theater in Niagara Falls, New York and work its way through major markets in the U.S. and Canada for a total of 24 stops. The final date currently announced for North America will be Oct. 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be the first time the band has ever played the iconic venue.
Joining the QOTSA on tour between September and October will be U.K. rock band, Royal Blood.
In November, the band will head off for another handful of dates in Europe and include stops at The O2 Arena in London and Manchester Arena.
Tickets go on sale for the Villains tour on Friday, June 22. For a full list of dates and where to find tickets, head to the band’s site at QOTSA.com/tour.
