The Nielsen report is saying for the first six months of the year, there have been 184.3 billion on-demand audio streams – a 62% increase over the same period in 2016.
With the success of big-name artists like Drake, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd streaming services surpassed a milestone in the first half of this year when over seven billion songs were accessed.
The report also saw the steady decline of music sales. Total album sales dropped by 18%. Digital track and album sales saw some of the largest hits with 24% and 20% drops, respectively. On the other hand, vinyl sales saw a 20% increase over this time in 2016, with fans heavily consuming older titles by artists like The Beatles.
